Neurotoxins – Botox, Dysport & Xeomin
You laugh. You frown. You concentrate. And over time, those expressions leave their mark upon your face. No one is immune to wrinkles. Just squinting in the bright sunlight or concentrating at a board meeting can create facial lines over time.
This type of wrinkle, which is created by muscle movement is called a “dynamic wrinkle” and Botox injections are designed to target the cause. It is not a dermal filler like Restylane, Juvederm, or Radiesse; instead, Botox injections temporarily paralyze the facial muscles that contribute to wrinkles every time they contract. One ten-minute treatment – a few tiny injections – relaxes the muscles in your face that cause lines to form. There is minimal pain that many patients describe as a pinprick or bug-bite sensation. Within a few days of treatment, targeted wrinkles begin to fade leaving skin looking more smooth and youthful. Improvements usually last between 3 to 6 months and can often be maintained with periodic touch-up treatments. These quick, simple injections can effectively improve your facial wrinkles while maintaining your ability to make natural facial expressions, an essential part of what keeps you looking like you!

How does it work?
Botox is a naturally occurring, purified protein. Botox® has been used for years to treat medical problems such as muscle spasms of the face and neck, migraine headaches and double vision. Those moderate to severe frown lines between your brows form over time as the result of muscle activity. Botox is injected directly into the muscles between the brows. It works by blocking the transmission of nerve impulses to the injected muscles; this reduces the activity of the muscles that cause those persistent lines to form.
Is it painful?
Discomfort is minimal. Most patients compare the sensation to a mild bug-bite and are usually surprised at how little discomfort they experience. Many people return directly to work or normal activity following treatment. Some patients experience a slight temporary bruising at the injection site. This can easily be covered with make-up.
While infrequent, mild temporary bruising is the most common side effect. In some cases, the medicine can migrate and cause a temporary weakness of nearby muscles. In rare cases, there can be a drooping of an eyelid or asymmetry of facial expression. The risk of any side effect depends on the muscles injected. Your doctor will discuss this with you in length before your treatment. Because the effects of Botox are completely reversible, any side effects are temporary and lasting only a few weeks.

Dysport is a new wrinkle relaxer that was recently approved by the FDA. Though approved in the United States in April 2009, Dysport has a history of use in other countries since 1991. If you are familiar with Botox, then you will have a good idea of the uses and treatment for which Dysport is used. Like Botox®, Dysport® is administered via injections at the site of wrinkles and acts by temporarily weakening the facial muscles, which then smooth and soften the facial wrinkles and lines caused by excessive action of these muscles. The result is a face that looks fresher and younger.
Dysport® is made from the same active ingredient as Botox® (made by Allergan), Clostridium botulinimtoxin type A. However, the manufacturing process of Dysport® is slightly different, resulting in slight differences in its clinical use for cosmetic purposes.
Onset of Action:
Dysport may provide a little faster onset of action While results do vary among individuals, Dysport may provide quicker results (1-3 days) than Botox (3-5 days).
Dysport has a greater spread (giving a more “natural” look) compared to BOTOX®. Botox®, on the other hand, tends to remain more localized, allowing for greater precision in the treatment area but possibly requiring more injections in the course of a treatment.
There may be some differences in terms of longevity. There are also claims and suggestions that Dysport® results might last up to a month or even two beyond that of Botox®.
The unit dosage of each product is also different and accordingly different number of units have to be used to achieve comparable results.
Potential side effects of Dysport are similar to those associated with Botox treatment. They include local numbness, swelling, bruising or a burning sensation during injection. These side effects can be mitigated by placing ice on the injection site before and after the procedure.
Dr. Zelaya is pleased to offer this new “wrinkle relaxer” for the reasons above and also because it is a new alternative for those who have developed antibodies to Botox which makes it no longer effective or less effective. Contact us to learn more about Dysport.
Skinworks is proud to offer Xeomin (incobotulinumtoxinA)
Xeomin, Pronounced zee-oh-min, is the latest arrival in the botulinum toxin business. Similar to Botox and Dysport, Xeomin is used to treat severe frown lines or “11’s” between the eyebrows. It is also used to treat forehead lines and crow’s feet.
It is manufactured by Merz, and has just received FDA approval for wrinkle reduction of the glabellar frown lines . Xeomin® was already FDA approved for use in adults with cervical dystonia and blepharospasm. Abnormal neck pain and movements characterize cervical dystonia , abnormal involuntary blinking or spasm of the eyelids marks blepharospasm. Xeomin® is manufactured by Merz Pharmaceuticals and has been used by more than 84,000 people worldwide. It is now approved for use in 20 countries. Xeomin® has been used extensively across Europe to diminish wrinkles and give patients a younger, refreshed look. It is now FDA approved for wrinkle reduction and offered at Skinworks.
Xeomin® is a “naked injectable,” meaning that it does not contain any additives. Xeomin’s results can last three to four months. The major benefit of a pure-form injectable is that the human body is less likely to become resistant to Xeomin® because there are simply less ingredients in the solution. Some patients have developed antibodies to Botox® Cosmetic and Dysport®, leading their bodies to reject the treatments or rendering them less effective.
Side effects to Xeomin are also similar to Botox and Dysport, these include mior swelling, bruising, headache and soreness are considered normal immediately after treatment.
