Botox & Fillers Q & A
What are dermal fillers?
Dermal fillers are a great nonsurgical method to diminish wrinkles and facial lines, restore fullness and volume to the facial area, and more.
With aging and other environmental factors, your face can naturally lose subcutaneous fat and your facial muscles can start to work closer to your skin’s surface, causing facial lines to appear more visible. Over time, your facial skin can lose elasticity and stretch. Dermal fillers can help temporarily address some of these problems.
Dr. Javier Zelaya offers different types of dermal fillers, including:
- Dysport®
- XEOMIN®
- BELOTERO BALANCE®
- Restylane®
- JUVÉDERM® and Juvederm Ultra XC®
- JUVÉDERM VOLUMA® XC
- RADIESSE®
- Sculptra®
Dr. Zelaya can help you figure out the best filler to meet your individual preferences and needs. Fillers are made up of different substances and materials, such as calcium hydroxylapatite and hyaluronic acid. Fillers are best used for specific purposes.
Multiple injections and, in some cases, multiple treatment sessions, might be necessary to achieve optimal results.
What can dermal fillers do?
Dr. Zelaya uses dermal fillers for various reasons, such as to:
- Enhance shallow contours
- Plump lips
- Soften facial creases and wrinkles
- Reconstruct contour deformities in the face
- Enhance the appearance of recessed scarring
- Reduce or remove the lower lid shadow
Dermal fillers can be helpful for treating some of the earlier physical signs of aging or to temporarily resolve a specific aesthetic problem.
What is BOTOX®?
BOTOX works differently than fillers. BOTOX injections are created from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. The microbe creates the botulinum toxin that weakens muscles and blocks signals from your nerves to your muscles. When injected into certain muscles in diluted, safe, and small doses, BOTOX temporarily paralyzes muscle activity. Your muscles can’t contract when BOTOX is injected into your face, and your wrinkles soften as your facial muscles relax.
The effects of BOTOX can last up to four months or longer.
When is BOTOX used?
Most often, BOTOX injections are used to diminish wrinkles and fine lines, such as frown lines, crow's feet, and forehead furrows. Dr. Zelaya offers BOTOX to address multiple aesthetic concerns, such as:
- Scarring
- Wrinkles
- Fine lines
BOTOX can also treat more functional problems, such as an overactive bladder, excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), and repetitive neck spasms (cervical dystonia). BOTOX injections can also effectively treat chronic migraines.
Dr. Zelaya injects BOTOX through a fine needle. You might experience some tolerable and mild discomfort, but most people don’t report any discomfort. A BOTOX treatment is quick and only takes a few minutes in the office.
