Laser Treatments Q & A
What are laser treatments?
Laser treatments like intense pulsed light (IPL) technology can be used for various cosmetic purposes, such as:
- Wrinkle and fine line reduction
- Scar reduction
- Laser hair removal
- Skin rejuvenation
- Laser vein treatment
- VBeam Laser
- Photodynamic Therapy PDT
- Xtract for Psoriais
- Xtract for Vitiligo
IPL technology utilizes scattered light on several different wavelengths to resolve skin issues. IPL penetrates the dermis — the second layer of your skin — without harming your epidermis, the top layer of your skin.
For skin concerns, the pigment cells in your skin absorb the IPL energy and convert it into heat that destroys any unwanted pigment and prompts the production of elastin and collagen, as well as cell regeneration.
What can I expect during my IPL skin treatment?
Dr. Javier Zelaya cleans the target area and applies a cooling gel. You wear dark glasses to protect your eyes from the light and Dr. Zelaya uses the IPL handpiece to apply gentle light pulses to your skin. The pulses sting your skin and might feel like a snapping rubber band.
Usually, multiple sessions are necessary for best results with at least one month in between treatments.
After your IPL session, you can expect a few days of sensitivity and redness. Pinpoint bruising might also occur, and any brown spots that appear typically peel off after a few days.
There’s no downtime for IPL treatments. Dr. Zelaya might recommend maintenance appointments once or twice a year.
What is laser hair removal?
Laser hair removal involves the use of laser energy and highly concentrated light beams to damage your hair follicles. The pigment in your hair shaft absorbs the light and generates heat that damages the follicle and inhibits hair growth.
In many cases, large unwanted areas of hair, such as on the back, can be treated in as little as five minutes.
Prior to your laser hair removal treatment, it’s important you avoid anything that might remove the hair root, such as waxing or plucking, for a certain amount of time.
Laser hair removal is effective and safe for many different areas of your body. It isn’t suitable for the areas around your eyes.
Most people need around three to six treatments to get lasting and noticeable results. Occasional maintenance treatments might be recommended in the future.
What can I expect after laser hair removal?
After your laser hair removal treatment, you might have some redness and mild swelling in the treatment area, and you might be given an antiseptic cream to soothe your skin.
You can return to your daily activities, but you’ll need to avoid direct sun exposure for around seven days.
