Ingrown Hair/ Folliculitis


 

Folliculitis is an infection of the hair follicles caused by a bacteria or fungus found most often on the face, scalp and areas rubbed by clothing such as thighs and groin. When follicles are irritated by shaving or wearing clothes that rub the skin the follicles become infected, appear as red pimples with a hair in the center that often itch or burn. One can increase the risk of developing folliculitis by: wearing tight clothing, hot tub/whirlpool/swimming pools that are not properly treated with chlorine, use of antibiotics or steroid cream for long periods, makeup, infected cut or scrape and diabetes.

Treatment Options:

Usually heals on its own in about two weeks however may require antibiotic ointment or cream, oral antibiotic, oral antifungal pills, corticosteroid to reduce inflammation, medicated shampoo and laser treatment.
