How to Make the Most of Your Spray Tan

How to Make the Most of Your Spray Tan

After the practice largely went out of fashion, younger generations are spending more time sunbathing, with a recent survey indicating that 28% of Gen Z see having a tan as important.

However, the risk of getting skin cancer, whether from direct sunlight or tanning beds, hasn’t changed. And that makes spray tans a safer choice.

If you’re hoping to give your skin a sunbathed look without the long-term health risks, Dr. Javier Zelaya and his experienced team at Skinworks Dermatology in New York City offer a tanning technique that may be perfect for your skin.

Spray tan basics

The idea of the artificial tan (also called the fake tan) goes back at least to the 1940s — after the suntan itself became popular some 20 years before, thanks to fashion icon Coco Chanel. Women would apply items such as tea bags to their skin to mimic a natural-looking tan.

In the 1950s, men would get in on the trend with a product known as the Man-Tan. This product used dihydroxyacetone (DHA) to brown the skin and was approved by the Food and Drug Administration for cosmetic use.

While a popular alternative to sunbathing, early application methods gave inconsistent looks until airbrush technology was introduced.

Benefits of use

Since many people still prize a bronzed appearance, and given the dangers of sunbathing or using tanning beds — namely, the excess UV exposure that leads to skin cancer — spray tans are a great alternative. That’s a significant benefit, but not the only one.

At your spray tan session here at Skinworks Dermatology, you can customize the color of your tan, from a light shade to a deep tan.

Maximize your tan

We use Bronze Biologic Spray Tan, a special formulation that employs a safe, nontoxic blend of cane and beet sugar extracts. To get the most from your tan, follow these post-treatment tips:

Wear loose clothing

After your spray tan, avoid tight-fitting clothes that can remove the tan before it has a chance to set in your skin.

Avoid sweating

Intense physical activity right after a spray session can cost you the results of treatment; stay cool and let the tan do its work.

Clean your skin carefully

Don’t use harsh cleansers or hot water on your skin right after your session. Clean your skin with warm water and mild products instead.

Keep your skin moist

The best way to maintain your new tan for as long as possible is to keep your skin moist. Use lotions and creams once the tan has set.

A spray tan is the safest way to get the look you want for the summer. To schedule your spray tan or learn more about how to make your tan last, call the Skinworks Dermatology office in Maspeth, Chelsea, or Park Slope, or request your appointment online today.
