Why Wax When You Can Dermaplane?

Why Wax When You Can Dermaplane?

Treating the skin on your face can be a frustrating business, especially for women who may develop facial hair and other problems over time due to hormonal changes.

Shaving, depilatories, tweezing, and at-home waxing are among the ways to manage facial hair, but how would you like a treatment that helps improve your skin in addition to removing unsightly hair? That’s the beauty of dermaplaning.

At their three New York City locations, Dr. Javier Zelaya and the skilled team at Skinworks Dermatology offer over 25 years of experience providing a wide variety of medical and cosmetic skin treatments, including dermaplaning, to help you look your best.

So, what’s dermaplaning, and how can it do what waxing can’t?

Understanding dermaplaning

Also referred to as microplaning, leveling, or blading, dermaplaning is a form of skin resurfacing designed to exfoliate dead skin.

The dermaplaning process removes dead skin cells and hair, which can help restore a youthful, radiant look. To accomplish this, your provider uses a specialized blade (comparable to a scalpel) that removes debris and other materials from the top layer of your skin.

The dermaplaning procedure

This treatment doesn’t require much preparation other than coming in with a clean face clear of makeup and any other cosmetics. If you’re experiencing an active skin problem, such as a sunburn or acne outbreak, you may need to wait for things to clear up before starting.

To start the treatment, you lie down and relax in a chair in a sterile environment, with numbing sprays or other types of local anesthesia available if needed.

Your provider applies the dermaplaning device (manual or electronic) at a 45-degree angle to gently exfoliate the skin. The treatment usually lasts for 20-30 minutes.

Once it’s finished, they soothe the treatment site with aloe or other creams and apply sunscreen to protect it from direct sunlight as it heals. Dermaplaning is low risk, but you may experience redness and tenderness for a few days following treatment.

Once the side effects wear off, you can expect to see clearer, younger looking skin.

Advantages over other treatments

Several factors can affect the condition of your skin, including ultraviolet (UV) rays, environmental pollutants and toxins, and skin irritants. Dermaplaning can help remove the effects these external problems can have on your skin.

So, in addition to simply removing hair, dermaplaning can help create new skin cells and even out your skin tone, which gives your face a younger appearance.

With dermaplaning, you can treat many skin conditions on your face aside from facial hair, including acne scars, fine wrinkles, and dull, dry, sun-damaged skin.

If you’re dissatisfied with other methods of facial skin treatment, dermaplaning is a safe option that can give you great results. If you’re ready to give it a try, call the Skinworks Dermatology office in Maspeth, Chelsea, or Park Slope, or book your appointment online today.
