What Can Dermaplaning Do for My Skin?

People may not think about their skin as an organ, but it’s the largest organ in the body. It protects the body, regulates temperature, absorbs necessary substances, and allows us to feel.

Constant exposure to the environment and other external threats leads to skin problems like discoloration, scratches, cuts, and acne.

The multitude of options for treating skin problems can be confusing, making it hard to choose what best suits your needs. Dermaplaning can help. It’s a minimally invasive option that addresses multiple issues to give you better-looking skin.

If you’re looking for a solution for your skin blemishes, talk to Dr. Javier Zelaya about dermaplaning, one of the med spa services offered by the dedicated team here at Skinworks Dermatology, with three New York City locations.

What’s dermaplaning?

Skin resurfacing works by removing skin using methods that include dermabrasion and microdermabrasion. Dermaplaning is a form of resurfacing. It treats imperfections with a device similar to a razor.

This method of manual exfoliation involves shaving away the top layer of skin to allow new, undamaged skin to grow in its place. Dermaplaning is most commonly used on the face.

How does it work?

We start the dermaplaning process by applying a numbing cream or anesthesia to the targeted area to manage discomfort. Next, the device removes unwanted blemishes or skin problems.

You might feel pressure during the procedure but shouldn’t feel pain. The time frame varies depending on the extent of the work you need, taking anywhere from a few minutes to an hour. You can expect to see results right after the procedure.

Typically, dermaplaning causes some redness and skin sensitivity, which can take up to three months to fade completely.

How does dermaplaning help?

This process gives skin a youthful glow, eliminating tiny hairs (peach fuzz) that often hold oil and debris and reducing the impact of fine lines, wrinkles, scarring, and sun damage.

Dermaplaning can also rid the skin of pitting and scars from acne, help with actinic keratosis and dull or dry skin, and prepare the skin for surgical procedures or other skin care options.

We may not recommend dermaplaning if you have acne, a cold sore outbreak, eczema, moles, freckles, skin tags, psoriasis, burns, or rashes.

Dermaplaning can provide you with smoother, healthier-looking skin. To see if you’re a candidate, make an appointment with Dr. Zelaya at Skinworks Dermatology today. Call the office in Maspeth, Chelsea, or Park Slope, or request your appointment online.
